Syllabus

This unit introduces some fundamental theories and methods for the solution of differential equations and multivariable integral and vector calculus problems. It aims for students to develop their mathematical skills for modelling and solving real world problems by using differential equations and multivariable calculus. Topics covered include first-order differential equations, second and higher order constant coefficient linear equations, power series solutions, Fourier series, partial differential equations, gradient and directional derivatives, maxima and minima, double and triple integrals, line and surface integrals, div and curl, path independence, Green's theorem, divergence theorem and Stokes theorem.
Lecture 1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Workshop 1 x 1 Hours Weekly
Seminar 1 x 1 Hours Weekly

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • 1 demonstrate understanding of foundational multivariable calculus concepts, including topological properties, multivariable limits, and continuity, and apply these to justify reasoning in problem-solving, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 2 analyse and apply differential calculus in multiple dimensions, including gradient and directional derivatives, to solve and optimise mathematical models, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
  • 3 evaluateandsolveproblems involving multiple integrals and vector fields, using appropriate computational and theoretical techniques to describe physical and geometric systems, GC1, GC3
  • 4 develop and critically assess mathematical models using ordinary differential equations, considering the effectiveness of different solution methods and their applicability, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6

Course Learning Outcomes

  • 1 Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of fundamental science, mathematics, data analytics, information science, and computing underpinning the broad field of engineering
